Realising that someone you love may need extra help at home can be difficult.
Often, there isn’t one particular moment when you know care is needed. Instead, you gradually notice that everyday things are becoming harder and you start to worry about whether they’re managing safely and comfortably at home.
At Papillon Home Care, we understand that asking for help can feel like a big step. But home care isn’t about taking away someone’s independence. It’s about helping them keep it for as long as possible.
What are the signs?
You may start considering home care if your loved one is struggling with:
- Getting up, washing or getting dressed
- Preparing meals or remembering medication
- Keeping on top of household tasks
- Shopping or getting out of the house
- Moving around safely
- Managing a long-term or complex condition
Home care can also give valuable short-term support following a hospital stay or illness, helping someone regain their confidence and independence.
What if they don’t want a carer?
This reaction is completely normal. It can feel overwhelming to have someone new in your home, especially if you’re used to being independent.
You don’t need to start with a lot of care right away.
Beginning with a bit of help at home, some company, or support with meals can make it easier to adjust to having support.
Try starting the conversation with:
“I’ve noticed things seem a little harder lately. Would it help if we looked at getting you a bit of extra support?”
Keep the conversation focused on what your loved one can still do, instead of what they might need help with now.
Don’t wait until there’s a crisis.
Getting support sooner can help prevent things from becoming too much. It also gives your loved one time to adjust and lets family members know they don’t have to handle everything by themselves.
Remember, asking for help doesn’t mean you’re letting your loved one down.
Sometimes, having professional care allows you to focus on being family again.
If you’re unsure whether home care is right for your family, we’re always happy to talk. You don’t need to have everything figured out before you get in touch.
Papillon Home Care is here to support you and your loved ones every step of the way.
