Signs that a loved one may need extra support

Have you noticed a few changes recently with an ageing parent, relative or partner? What should you look for when they need extra support?

The effects of ageing can creep up slowly, and it is often down to family members to recognise when someone may need some extra support and assistance.

It’s often hard for people to admit when they need help; they don’t want to be a burden and may wish to stay independent at home for as long as possible.

Five signs to look out for:

  1. Hygiene – Are they looking more unkempt? For example, not keeping on top of washing, teeth brushing and wearing the same clothes daily.
  2. Physical changes – Do they seem more lethargic? Struggling to get up or sitting down more to do tasks?
  3. Diet – Are they eating regularly? Is there a reduction in appetite, weight loss, or dehydration?
  4. Forgetfulness – Are they missing appointments/ medications? Forgetting to call or meet up with a friend?
  5. Accidents – Have you noticed a fall? Unsteady on their feet? Maybe some bumps and bruises?

It can feel overwhelming and emotional trying to cope with the growing situation. But there is help out there.

At Papillon Home Care, we offer a range of home care services and are there to help.
